The Original Ms.O
Sunday 17 September @ 2:00 pm$20
Award-winning songwriter Maureen O’Brien has been so busy with her theme shows and theatre projects over the past 5 years, that her local fans could be forgiven for thinking she has stopped writing songs. But nothing could be further from the truth.
Although she is no longer touring, nor promoting her work commercially, she has produced the equivalent of 4 albums during this time – one of which was recorded last year. Audiences who have been coming along to her Theatre productions will have heard some of the material – but the non-theatre goers have missed out. Similarly, new fans are unlikely to have experienced the earlier material, or those songs on her previous 6 albums.
Like most songwriters, her music has matured and evolved over the years since her first recording in 1999. Hence, it’s time she shared the broad spectrum of her work and will do that on Sunday 17th September, at The Dungeon 2pm.
For those unfamiliar with her music, her work has been described as follows:
“It’s like a stealth bomber – you don’t see it or hear it coming! It’s not till the second or third listen that the power of her songs really hit home. Each time I go back, I hear something new, pick up something I missed before. I’ve never experienced that with songs before – books or poetry sometimes – but never songs.”
“… I settled in for an afternoon of a little light music … so I thought! I got a whole lot more than I anticipated! The messages were so powerful, the lyrics wash over you like a warm blankie, and the voice! – it just draws you in to a cosy space…”
“I’ve never heard songs like this, you don’t hear anything like this on commercial stations. It’s hard to define the music in one simple style. The songs have meanings and message and sometimes they’re just downright funny…”
